Using Modeling, Simulation to Optimize Plant Control Systems

By Tony Lennon, MathWorks

Control system tuning presents challenges in chemical, power, refining, and other process industry plants. Control loops exhibit inherently nonlinear dynamics, loop interaction effects, and hysteresis caused by equipment degradation. As a result, trial-and-error loop tuning is impractical and often, unsafe. Plant upgrades compound the challenge, extending process operations beyond their original design specifications and requiring a different control architecture.

This article, published in Intech, explains how modeling and simulation enable controls engineers to safely and cost-effectively optimize plant control systems, refine the control architecture, and tune individual loop performance.
